The thought of giving birth brings up fear in just about every expectant mom. But what most moms don¡¦t realize is that much of that fear comes from not knowing how to seize their power. That¡¦s exactly what FEAR to FREEDOM classes offer. FEAR to FREEDOM helps moms connect with their body, find their voice ¡V their place of internal power, and create an action plan that puts them at the center of their birth experience. Every mom wants a healthy baby, but FEAR to FREEDOM is about more. It¡¦s about finding strength as a mom. The journey a mom travels to give birth requires courage and deserves support. Please join us for a 2 day weekend intensive of FEAR to FREEDOM and see how liberating the journey can be. Learn how making birth choices out of freedom, not fear leads to positive birth experiences.

Envision a world where birth is undisturbed and women are supported in making their decisions for their birth. They are directed from within instead of led by those who have replaced their inner voice, limiting their choices into the unknown.- Teresa Howard

Envision a world where women were in charge of their birth choices, where fear was replaced with strength and wisdom.- Charlotte Scott

WHAT OTHERS SAY
Our previous students share:

I very much loved it! Fear to Freedom offers a phenomenal experience connecting spirit, mind and body. This 2-day intensive was filled with emotion, exploration and gentle exercise. Teresa and Charlotte are great and sensitive teachers- you will be in good hands when you go! This class is just as practical as it is inspirational. You will be able to practice listening to and finding your instincts. I had to connect all the knowledge I have gained regarding labor and delivery to the far more important spiritual aspect of transforming into a mother. I am very grateful to have had this experience and met some amazing current and soon-to-be mothers too! It was a wonderful weekend. Thanks!!! Such an empowering event. I am so grateful to have been there. Loved it! Feels like something in me has shifted. Absolutely wonderful class – thanks so much for all your love and support! This UNPRECEDENTED method of childbirth education is directed towards engaging a woman with her innate wisdom and power. The class takes a woman on a journey that connects her to her body, tunes her into the power of her voice and intuition and gives her the tools that she needs to activate the vision she has for her birth. Our training is with Karen Brody of the BOLD movement and the originator of this course curriculum. We will be integrating Body, Voice and Action. We are certified F2F facilitators.

I recently received an email with these questions and comments- and thought it would make a great blog article!

Hi there: I’m just at the beginning stages of considering a doula. I’m giving birth in a local hospital with a doctor . I have a couple of concerns and I was wondering if you could give me your opinion.  I’m thinking about hiring a doula because my mother and sisters don’t live in the United States.

We doula mostly in hospitals, although we love supporting women at home births as well. And often folks have family that either does not live close or they do not plan to include for a number of different reasons. Having a doula provides one more set of hands to support and certainly can act as a bit of information guidance along the way. Even with a sister or mother along for support, often women find a doula a wonderful addition to the labor support team.

I told my doctor I’d like to try to give birth without an epidural and she asked me if I would also have a root canal without anesthetic- which I wouldn’t. She also said since this is my first baby, it’s more likely to be long and difficult. So now my husband thinks I should have an epidural too. But I don’t want to give birth laying on my back etc.  Continue reading »

I have loved to dance since I was a little girl. Something about the freedom of moving my body always brought me great joy and offered a place of solace. I often did much better in situations that weren’t choreographed, but instead came from my own inner rhythm, a place where I could freely express myself. In the past many years I have studied a type of dance that helped me change the way I looked at dance. Under the guidance of Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythm™ teachers I found that dance was just another name for movement. That moving my body in the way it wanted to move gave me a sense of freedom and discovery. I discovered that when I moved my body my inner world unfolded. When I gave permission to my feet, to my shoulders, to my head to move…something unlocked inside of me that gave me permission to be more of who I am. It was a journey of surrendering.

When I was introduced to the idea of “Dancing for Birth” ™ I thought how perfect this would be for me. I had heard that they would use Belly dance moves, African dance moves and other cultural dance practices to assist a mom in labor. As a labor doula and a life time lover of dance I was excited to take this class. I have to say it was eye opening.

Much like the hours spent on dance floors discovering the language of my body I found that Dancing For Birth was also a language. The movements, whether based in Belly dance, African dance, Caribbean or Latin were all unfolding a language to pregnant women on how to use their bodies to connect to their babies and to help them to open their bodies in preparation for birth. To open their hips, yes, but to also open their hearts. Continue reading »

When I attended the Dancing For BirthTM workshop I had no idea how much motherlore was woven into the curriculum. I thought it was going to be a nice dance movement enhancement based on the little bit of a class I had been exposed to at a doula conference. Boy was I in for an awakening.

As a childbirth educator for over 16 years, I was aware of how important optimal fetal positioning was to a laboring mom. This class made teaching lining up your baby for labor so much more fun than holding a pelvis and describing some techniques to get the baby to turn to LOT and then OA for labor!

As a doula for over 18 years, I was aware of how important movement was in labor. I certainly had used the birth ball and swaying to help facilitate that movement. But now I carry a hip scarf and encourage my moms to swing their hips and move a lot more. It has been amazing to see moms get off the ball and dance powerfully to Beyonce and not just sway to Enya as in the past! I have seen moms who were not progressing change with these techniques in minutes- not hours!

I recently had a conversation with a mom about the birth she desired. She told me about the location and care providers she had chosen. She told me she had shared she wanted a natural birth with her doctors and they did not dismiss the idea. She has chosen the hospital in the metro area that has the highest cesarean rate. And it is one of the large metro hospitals that has well over a 95% epidural rate. So what does that mean?

Often times when you say I want a natural birth, the assumption is that you mean the baby comes out of the part of your baby that is natural- not having a cesarean birth. So when you say to a care provider you want a natural birth, perhaps the use of the term non-medicated, intervention free would be better used. Continue reading »

Having No Birth Plan Is Worst Birth Plan Ever is an article written by Christie Haskell. It is a tongue in cheek article with a substantial bite. I totally agree that not having a plan of action to get the birth you desire is a bad idea. But I am not a proponent of having a lengthy plan typed out with information and an expectation that it is going to be followed or even read by many of your care providers, much less even honored. Plus sometimes folks think that if they write it out, it will insure it will happen, although they make no other provisions for making it so. They read an article about the use of a birth stool for instance and then put it in their plan to use one. Well guess what, most hospitals don’t have one to be used. There is information about laboring at home in early labor- but they read it after you arrive…so why is it there? There is something about pushing in whatever position you desire, but you chose a doctor who always puts “his little mamas” in the stirrups and breaks the bed down.

I think there is a strong need for the desires of a woman to be met in a different way. She needs to educate herself by taking a comprehensive childbirth class to investigate what her options are. I think a lot of introspective thinking about what she wants is also needed. She need not choose a birth based on the medical model, what her insurance company demands, what her mama wants for her or her girl friends, and also honestly not just what her partner thinks either- it is her body and primarily her experience in the end. I don’t want to diminish the partner’s role, but he is a support person here, not the leading role, she is.  Continue reading »
