A friend designed this new diet and fitness ap. It reminds me of Weight Watchers in the ability to track calories and fat as well as exercise. It is FREE and is has an app for your phone too! I started it today. I can put in what I have eaten, what exercise I have done for the day and even has an inspirational section to help motivate yourself and others. It has a add friend feature and blog. It even has a place to list groups and put up challenges. I will keep you posted on how this is working for me. I have gained a bit of weight over the winter and had to stop walking due to an injury. But I am back walking and trying to eat regularly and healthy. Check out the site SlimKicker.  And if you try it out, let me know what you think!

This is how Christine describes it- “Basically, the main problem with being fit and eating healthy is motivation and willpower. It’s such an abstract goal that seems overwhelming. It seems the best way to counter this is to make it into  smaller, winnable games.  So my app makes living healthy, eating healthy, and fitness into a RPG  game, where users earn points, “level up’, and earn badges as they accomplish their health goals. Everytime they add something healthy like whole greens, and veggies to their food log, they earn points. Every time they complete a workout, they earn points. As they achieve more and more, they’ll level up and unlock badges… Of course, to appeal to people’s need for achievements/progress, I’m also  adding charts, and graphs to show their progress… I think people love that sorta stuff. The whole idea is to shift people’s attitude towards healthy living as fun, and enjoyable. And there’s a web version for those  that don’t own smartphones.”

I have been a doula for a long time. I have owned the VHS tape the Rebozo Way by Guadalupe Trueba. I have used rebozos in labor for more than a decade. I teach the use of them in my childbirth class. I have attended a Spinning Babies training with Gail Tully and am certified as a Dancing for Birth instructor with Stephanie Larson  where they both teach the use in helping facilitate movement for babies in labor.

But not until I attended Gena Kirby’s Rebozo Workshop had I ever heard the analogy of using the rebozo like arm extensions in supporting a mom in pregnancy and labor. When she said that something clicked! Did I learn anything I had never been exposed to before in my previous training?- no. But was it delightful to be challenged to take that which I had been shown in the past to a new level and begin to really incorporate it into my labor support more fully- yep! And for that I can say thank you to Gena for inspiring me to take a rebozo use to a new level with my work as a doula and childbirth educator.

She told us about a company out of Vancouver that supported a village of women in Laos who made jias and supported their families in doing so. A jia is the asian version of a rebozo- the mexican shawl that midwives use in labor to help a woman be more comfortable and also for use in labor.  I contacted the company and put together an order for several of the birth professionals in the Atlanta area. but I also ordered some for inventory to sell to others.  These are very large rebozos- they average 8.8 feet long and are about 27 inches wide.

They can be used to carry infants and children as well as the “extensions of your arms” if you are a birth care provider.

If you want to purchase one, let me know. The pics are below. The cost is $50 and is a pick up price and I will have them in stock by late April. Here are some photos of a rebozo in use for inspiration!  And I hope Gena returns to Atlanta- I would happily host her again to be further inspired!

Can you imagine taking that dis-empowering fear filled thought and exploring it for a moment? See if fully. And then imagine the exact opposite thought to that one- where you are filled with confidence and excitement. And let that one resonate for a moment.  Now hold them together. Thoughts are only objects. You can release them. Learn what you need to learn from them and then let them go. See yourself coping in the midst of the difficult one and see yourself being filled with joy at the enjoyment of the other. Now imagine you place them in your hand and blow them away….release them.

In the Red Tent night of the Birthing Again class  that I teach, I have the moms write down the one thing that they want to release from their negative thinking- whether it is a fear for this present pregnancy and labor or if it is an experience they hold onto of their past birth. We fold the paper up and put it in a silver vessel that I have and light it with a lighter. It burns until it is fully burned up and is only ashes.

I challenge you to consider your fears- look them squarely in the eyes. See yourself in that moment- see yourself  coping in the storm. Now close your eyes for a moment and reopen them seeing the exact opposite thing occurring. See yourself filled with that overflowing joy. Smile or laugh. Now put both of those thoughts together and release them. Watch as they blow away. Both are possibilities. But you get to decide if you will have them linger with you or if you will hold to that heart felt desire and move forward.

I choose to move forward without fear. How about you?
